Die Medien- und Sozialwissenschaft machen es sich bereits seit einigen Jahrzehnten zur Aufgabe, diese Fragen zu beantworten. Um jedoch einzelne Forschungsergebnisse und Studien miteinander zu vergleichen, ist eine einheitliche Definition und Operationalisierung der Begriffe „Gewalt“ und „Aggression“ notwendig, was once bis heute aber nicht gegeben ist.
In den folgenden Kapiteln soll vor allem das soziale Umfeld der Jugendlichen und dessen Einfluss auf die Wirkung medialer Gewalt im Mittelpunkt stehen. Hierfür wird zuerst die Frage diskutiert, warum Jugendliche überhaupt violente Inhalte selektieren. Sowohl die Identität des Jugendlichen als auch verschiedene stimmungsregulierende Mechanismen und die individuelle Persönlichkeit spielen hier eine wichtige Rolle. Darüber hinaus soll auf die Wirkung von Mediengewalt eingegangen werden. Hierbei werden vor allem die rezipientenseitigen Einflussfaktoren modify und soziales Umfeld näher betrachtet. Im Anschluss sollen medienpädagogische Ansätze für Eltern und Schulen diskutiert und die Rolle von Altersfreigaben erläutert werden. Im letzten Kapitel wird ein abschließendes Fazit über die behandelten Themen gezogen.
